Colony: Haven
On a great Sleeper ship, they left Earth behind in stasis, seeking a better life than that on their polluted, dying world. Only a handful of crew were awake in three month shifts to operate the machinery and keep an eye on the stasis pods. Their destination: Paradise. A new world, seen on deep space scanners as one that would abundantly support human life. It is so lovely in it's untouched glory. No sign of industrialization, and all the other monstrosities of Earth.
The ship has landed, expending the last of its fuel, and those in stasis are being woke up to see their new world for the first time. First order of business after getting used to walking again, will be setting up temporary shelter and exploring for a suitable site for the permanent settlement to be called Haven. Prefabricated buildings are available, but will require assembly. Most of the tools and devices needed to settle a new world have been provided, as has a six-month supply of prepack freeze-dried rations - wholesome and nutritious, but tasting like the bottom of an ashtray.
The colonists have their work set out for them - settling this brave new world, building a colony and becoming self supporting before supplied food runs out. They will also have to contend with other, stranger things...
Unknown to the Colonists, there are two Races already living on Paradise. The Benelians, a cat-like humanoid race, and the Malessians, a lizard-like humanoid race. They co-exist in an uneasy peace, with the occasional raids against each other. Both races are going to be fearful that the Colonists will side with the other, but each will approach the situation different, once they learn that they have arrived. The Benelians, will try to befriend the Colonists, while the Malessians will try to wipe them out. This doesn't mean that all members of each race feel this way, just the majority.
The Colonists will have limited technology to help them get started, but essentially wish a society more medieval. So no high tech guns and such. Normal firearms can exist since there's probably someone in the group that's a chemist and would know how to make gunpowder. Early on in their arrival, the colonists are going to notice that scanners and elecronic devices work only intermittantly, as the atmosphere of Paradise is awash with small but numerous elecromagnetic storms. When one is nearby, anything running on any sort of electromagnetic power source becomes unreliable. These storms are frequent, but never last too long.
The Benelians and the Malessians will be purely medieval, swords, knives, bows, ect type weapons. The Benelians live in trees with houses (Think of the Ewoks from Star Wars or the Forest Elves from LotR), while the Malessians live in mud and grass huts in more swampy like terrain. Benelians and Malessians mature quickly, having litters and clutches respectively. They reach Adolesent at 4yrs, are Adults by 8yrs, Middle Aged at 13yrs, and Dead by 20 yrs.
